Changing from a Job-Seeker Visa to a Work Visa in Korea (D-10 to E-7)

Understand the D-10 job-seeking and internship boundaries, 2026 E-7 wage bands, employer evidence and when you must receive a status change before starting.

A Korean D-10 job-seeking status gives eligible foreigners time to seek qualifying professional employment; it does not by itself authorise you to begin an ordinary full-time E-7 job. Once a company offers a suitable role, both your occupational eligibility and the employer's sponsorship/evidence must satisfy the relevant E-7 category, and Immigration must approve the necessary change of stay status before you perform work outside the D-10 permission. A signed contract, planned first day and an unexpired residence card are not substitutes.

This guide is for someone genuinely moving from professional job seeking (usually D-10-1) to an eligible E-7 occupation. A technology start-up preparatory D-10-2, a graduate internship, and an E-7-4 skilled-worker points programme are not one interchangeable route.

The Korean Government's employment guide identifies job preparation, short internship and ordinary qualified employment as different statuses, while the official law explainer requires advance change-of-status permission before different activities.

What can you do while still on D-10?

D-10-1 is for searching for relevant jobs and eligible internships associated with professional E-1–E-7-type activities. It is not a general open work permit. An internship may have its own allowances and time limits: ask the school and immigration office to verify that the specific host employer, duties, remuneration and dates fit your current D-10 permission. Calling a regular production job a “training internship” doesn't make it lawful.

The duration needs a current-date check. The government's older Study in Korea overview still says up to two years, six-month renewals. The Ministry of Justice's December 2025 D-10 improvements instead describe up to three years, one-year extensions for eligible graduates of domestic Korean universities, and longer eligible internships. These are not a blanket three-year allowance for every D-10 subtype or overseas graduate. Ask Immigration which scheme and actual stay expiry your record follows. If your card says it expires next month, do not wait for a supposed three-year maximum to take action.

Example: A graduate has a D-10 card valid through 20 November, and HR says it will apply for the E-7 change in early December. That is not a safe plan just because some eligible graduates can now remain in the D-10 programme for a longer maximum. Obtain the actual status extension or change application while existing stay remains lawful and ask Immigration what is permitted pending a decision.

The employer must meet a real E-7 classification

The government's E-7 guidance says a university graduate's relevant Korean degree may remove certain career-experience requirements in a matching E-7 occupation; it does not turn every job title into E-7. The employer supplies employment contract, business registration/corporate documents, position description and sometimes qualification, work-experience records, occupational recommendations or proof of recruitment need.

Verify the precise occupation code, headcount and Korean workforce limits, company conditions and sector exceptions. The same guide flags stricter hiring in small domestic-market businesses and where E-7 employment is high relative to Korean staff. Do not generalise a single employee-ratio rule to every high-tech firm or government-recommended sector.

For applications during 1 February–31 December 2026, the Ministry of Justice's 2026 E-7 pay notice publishes these annual compensation thresholds, subject to named occupation-specific exceptions:

E-7 classificationGovernment's general 2026 annual threshold
E-7-1 professional₩31,120,000
E-7-2 semi-professional₩25,890,000
E-7-3 general skilled₩25,890,000
E-7-4 skilled points₩26,000,000, but the route itself has different qualifying background

Worked salary example: An E-7-1 engineer offered ₩30 million per year is ₩1.12 million below the general 2026 threshold. A contract for ₩32 million clears that arithmetic threshold, but may still fail the required qualification, occupation, employer or exception checks. Salary threshold is not employer sponsorship approval, and monthly allowances cannot safely be treated as qualifying pay without checking the rule's wage definition.

A submission plan that protects your start date

Before the promised job begins, put the employee and employer documents together:

  1. Employee: passport, residence card, approved current D-10 status/expiry, university degree and transcripts, work-experience certificates where applicable, qualification/licensing records and documentation of legal address.
  2. Employer: signed employment contract specifying correct duties, salary, hours, workplace and start date, business/corporate registration, occupation code, staff/company eligibility and any required recommendation/necessity evidence.
  3. Application: use HiKorea or the immigration office responsible for the residence, confirm the exact E-7 subtype and change-of-status procedure, submit and retain the real filing record.
  4. Do not begin regular E-7 activity until the authority has granted the permission that covers it; ask the company to amend the start date if approval is delayed. A filing acknowledgement is not an authorisation.

Employer says, “Our other foreign employee did this in one day”: a different occupation, business size, income, education or Immigration jurisdiction changes evidence and processing. Agree a conditional start date, not a false promise of a specific decision time.

If the switch fails

E-7 code doesn't fit your actual duties: the employer should check a genuinely lawful occupational classification; don't relabel manual labour as “engineer.” Salary below threshold: negotiate lawful compensation if feasible, but don't fabricate a higher wage contract. Degree/work experience insufficient: ask for the category-specific acceptable qualifications or consider a different lawful stay/job path. D-10 expires before decision: immediately request status-specific guidance from Immigration; a pending job offer isn't a residence extension.

Today, ask HR these four questions: Which exact E-7 occupation and subtype? Which 2026 wage and exception? Who submits the employer and employee evidence? On which date can I legally begin, based on actual approved status? For the wider work-status map see working and living in Korea, and for registration/reporting see Korean residence card and address changes.
