You can have working mobile data in Korea and still be unable to complete a reservation. You can also have a Korean phone number and still fail a website's identity check.
Before buying a SIM or eSIM, separate internet access, calls, text messages and identity verification. A product can support some of these without supporting all of them. The important question is what the exact plan enables, not whether it is a plastic SIM or a downloadable eSIM.
Which product actually solves your problem?
You only need maps, chat apps and saved tickets: buy a Data Only tourist eSIM if your unlocked phone supports it and you can keep another working contact method. LG U+ says its Data Only offer does not support ordinary SMS verification for restaurant or taxi sign-up. Its general FAQ's incoming-call/text table is worded differently, so do not assume a particular data-only SKU can receive the code your app needs; use the exact plan's terms. You cannot turn LG U+'s Data Only eSIM into a voice plan by topping up after purchase.
You need a Korean 010 number for ordinary restaurant/taxi SMS or to phone a host: choose a Data+Voice tourist plan with that feature listed. LG U+ advertises voice/text and ordinary SMS support and says its Data+Voice eSIM requires an airport counter visit and passport check to obtain its QR details; its data-only eSIM can be delivered online. KT separately offers a tourist Data/Call/SMS eSIM, but KT says outgoing voice/text requires its airport roaming-centre entry check, and the voice-capable product is sold on site. A 010 number does not establish that every named app or bank will accept your line.
You need bank, government or full subscriber-identity verification, especially as a future resident: neither LG U+'s tourist Data+Voice nor KT's tourist SIM promises it. Do not buy repeated tourist eSIMs to fix an ARC/registered-subscriber identity failure. Arrange a separately eligible resident line after completing the relevant lawful stay and carrier-registration steps below.
These are product-specific examples, not a ranking of all Korean carriers. Check the operator's currently offered plan and your phone's carrier unlock before paying.
Four different things a phone service can do
| Capability | What you want to accomplish | What to ask the seller |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile data | Use maps, email, translation and online tickets | Is the device supported, and when does plan validity start? |
| Calls | Receive a call or speak to a local business | Are incoming and outgoing calls both enabled? Is credit required? |
| Ordinary SMS | Receive a booking code or text notification | Does this exact product receive the kind of SMS the service sends? |
| Identity verification | Pass a service's subscriber-identity check | Does this plan support that verification, with your documents and registration status? |
Receiving a text establishes that a message reached the number. It does not, by itself, establish that the line satisfies another service's identity requirements.
If an app asks for additional identity details, stop treating the problem as simply “I need more data” or “I need a different eSIM.”
Two carriers, four different checks
LG U+ tourist products: Its official travel setup guide distinguishes Data Only, which cannot complete ordinary reservation/taxi SMS verification and cannot later add voice to that SKU, from Data+Voice, which supports calls/texts and a Korean 010 number. The voice-capable eSIM requires airport passport verification; plain data-only eSIM can be installed from an online QR. LG U+ says neither tourist arrangement supplies banking/government subscriber-identity authentication. The general FAQ also contains a table showing incoming calls/texts for some Data Only SIM descriptions: do not extend that ambiguous table to a specific eSIM's SMS verification without checking the SKU with LG U+.
KT tourist eSIM: KT's official product comparison lists Data only separately from Data/Call/SMS. The latter can use outgoing calls and texts only after the passport/entry check at a KT airport roaming counter. This is an identity check to activate a tourist mobile product; it is not the registered-subscriber verification used by banks or government portals. KT explicitly states personal authentication is unsupported and its tourist plan maximum including extensions is 90 days from initial activation. Do not assume topping up or owning a foreigner registration card automatically removes this product limit.
Before leaving the airport if you require voice/SMS: take the passport used for booking to the matching operator's roaming counter, complete the required entry check, ask staff to test both sending and receiving a regular text/call on the exact product, and retain the order/plan name. If this step is skipped, a phone can show data and a 010 number while outgoing voice/text remains unavailable under that operator's conditions.
A restaurant that sends only a basic code may work with a tourist Data+Voice line; an application asking for a registered name, resident ID or PASS-based subscriber check is a different and stricter problem. An SMS arriving is not proof the second verification will pass.
Write down your essential tasks first
Before choosing a plan, make a short list of the services you actually expect to use.
| Task | Try before departure | Backup to arrange |
|---|---|---|
| Find your accommodation | Save its Korean address and location | Offline address and the property's contact details |
| Show a booking | Download the confirmation | A screenshot or PDF |
| Book a particular restaurant | Check the exact booking channel's current requirements | Direct enquiry or another booking method offered by the venue |
| Contact a driver or host | Confirm whether the service uses in-app messages, SMS or calls | A contact method both parties can use |
| Set up a resident service | Ask its provider what identity and phone registration it accepts | A separate onboarding plan after arrival |
This avoids paying extra for a number that does not solve your actual problem. It also avoids assuming you need a Korean number for every travel task.
App requirements change. Test the service's current visitor-facing booking flow yourself, without making an unwanted purchase, before treating an old screenshot as proof.
Ask these questions before paying
- Does this exact plan include a usable Korean phone number? A number displayed in device settings is not enough to establish its service features.
- Can it receive calls and SMS, and can it send them? These are separate capabilities.
- Is any counter visit or identity/entry check needed before voice or text features work?
- Does it support the named identity-verification service I need? Give the provider the actual service name or error message.
- What documents must I provide, and through which official channel?
- When does validity begin: purchase, installation, activation or first network use?
- What happens if I change phone, delete the eSIM or extend the trip?
For compatibility, follow the carrier's device requirements. LG U+ says its service requires an appropriately unlocked compatible phone. An eSIM-capable model is not automatically unlocked. (LG U+ tourist SIM/eSIM FAQ)
If the SIM works but the app does not
Use the failure to identify the next check:
No internet connection: inspect the carrier's activation instructions, supported device, installed plan and relevant settings. Use the official support channel for that plan.
Data works, but no text arrives: check whether SMS is included and activated, whether the number was entered in the format requested, and whether the app accepts this type of number. Repeatedly requesting codes may not resolve a product limitation.
A text arrives, but verification still fails: record the exact error. Ask the service whether it requires subscriber-identity verification and what it accepts. Do not conclude that receiving an SMS proves the identity check should succeed.
A transaction still fails after verification: payment acceptance, booking eligibility and availability are separate from connectivity. Ask the merchant or service about the failed step.
A different eSIM is worth considering only after the required capability is identified. Otherwise, you may buy the same limitation twice.
If you stay longer: residence registration is not SIM activation
An incoming worker or student with a stay intended to exceed 90 days: Korea's government registration guidance generally requires foreigner registration within 90 days of entry (specific legal exceptions/status rules exist). Complete immigration registration through its proper office; this is separate from buying a telecom subscription and does not automatically convert a tourist line.
After you have your residence card / alien registration information: choose a carrier and plan that explicitly accepts your lawful registration status for subscriber-identity verification. A KT M Mobile operator FAQ says its eligible foreign-name accounts may use identity verification, but mismatches against foreigner-registration-card information can cause failure and should be resolved with the carrier. That statement applies to KT M Mobile's eligible subscriber accounts, not KT airport tourist SIMs or every app. Ask the resident carrier what name transliteration, registration number, plan type and service verification setup it supports.
If you bought a tourist 010 number first: ask the existing operator and intended resident carrier whether this exact temporary line can be retained or ported under your new registration. We did not find a primary-source guarantee that every tourist number can be kept, upgraded or transferred. Do not make a short-lived tourist number the sole recovery method for banking or essential accounts. Keep your existing login method until the resident line has passed the exact required verification.
For a visit rather than a move, choose simple connectivity and a separate booking backup rather than paying for a resident product you are not eligible to buy. Our work and longer-stay guide covers the surrounding immigration process, not an automatic telecom entitlement.
Keep a small offline fallback
Save your first accommodation's address in Hangul, its contact details, the airport-to-hotel route and essential booking confirmations. Keep access to your existing authentication method for important accounts until the replacement is working.
Never give a shop or stranger your banking password or a bank's one-time login code to “fix” a tourist SIM. Use the carrier's official onboarding and support processes for the information it legitimately requires.
The right purchase is the plan whose documented features match your tasks. “Includes a Korean number” is one useful feature, not a universal access pass.
